Navy Yard shooter identity confirmed by FBI using fingerprints: 34-year-old Aaron Alexis from Fort Worth, Texas, was lone gunman, worked as civilian contractor

"NBC News is identifying the gunman responsible for the deadly rampage at the Washington Navy Yard as a 34-year-old civilian contractor from Fort Worth, Texas named Aaron Alexis."

NBC News correspondent Pete Williams says all indications show it was a lone gunman who was responsible for today's shooting. Williams says the white male that DC police said earlier they were looking for as a possible additional gunman has been cleared and is not a suspect.

The FBI, which now is leading the investigation, believes the gunman used the identification of a man who used to work at Navy Yard, reported Pete Williams of NBC News. The ID was found next to his body in Building 197, where most of the victims were shot on the third and fourth floors.

People with proper badges are allowed to enter Navy Yard without having their bags checked, Williams reported.

Williams says the FBI used fingerprints to confirm Alexis's identity.
