Windows 8 has been a headache for many; especially because
of the missing Start button. The free update Windows 8.1 -- codenamed Windows
Blue – is now available as a beta version download until the final release of
Windows 8.1 comes out later this year. Microsoft has a video about Windows 8.1
update available at the MEET WINDOWS 8.1 PREVIEW Video website:
windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/preview
The video shows what improved features Windows 8.1 offers.
From the video website, Microsoft has a link to a FAQ web page and a link to
download the Windows 8.1 update.
In case you don’t like to read the FAQs, Microsoft warns
that downloading the beta version of the Windows 8.1 free update to Windows 8
is more for experienced users.
Watching the Windows 8.1 preview is worth the time though to
see that Microsoft listened to the many complaints about Windows 8.
Windows 8.1 has a
few more improved features:
Personalization: Windows 8.1 allows users to personalize the
Start screen more with new colors, backgrounds, photos, and layout.
Start button: In Windows 8.1, Microsoft brought back the
Start button on the left side of the screen to go to Control Panel settings,
open the Task Manager, perform a search, and other useful system tools like it
used to be in Windows 7.
Search feature: Being able to search for files, pictures, etc. will also be again available from the left side of the screen and more search results are available.
Apps: Windows 8.1 has more usable apps, a new look, and
auto-updates of apps. The camera app has been improved.
Snap views: Running several apps in Windows 8 created a
problem for developers and Windows 8 users who need flexibility in using
several apps at the same time. Windows 8.1 users ideally can now run more apps
simultaneously on one monitor by resizing app windows and using the Snap
function.
Boot to Desktop: Some Windows 8 users do not like the Start
screen at all. Windows 8.1 now allows users to boot directly to the desktop.
So far, the feedback by many techies is that they like
Windows 8.1 but the verdict is still out until the full release of Windows 8.1
is out there. What people do appreciate is that Microsoft listened to all the
complaints about Windows 8 and that they worked on an improvement.
