Dynamic pricing: Internet companies use a shopper’s browser history, IP address, online shopping habits to change prices (Video)

Dynamic pricing is the opposite of what one might call static pricing. Dynamic means change and internet companies change their prices according to information collected from an online shopper. When shopping online, internet companies can generally see what computer a person is using, where the computer is located, what other websites the computer user has visited, what action a computer user takes after visiting a website, and how fast someone is buying something.

Ever wondered why if you look up an item on Amazon.com, the same  item all of a sudden appears on advertisements on other internet pages?

If you are a fast buyer using the same computer, the chance is that you will pay a higher price than a shopper who looks around for the best price.

As long as a shopper uses the same IP address, most often from the same home, online businesses know what they need to know about a person in order to get the most money.

As San Diego’s 10News video report from July 30, 2013, highlights, in the end -- finding the best price is up to the savvy shopper. However, being aware about dynamic pricing and knowing that online businesses collect information about one’s shopping habits (and much more) might help turn unsuspecting shoppers into savvy and dynamic shoppers.

FBI raid rescues 105 children ages 13 to 17 from prostitution in 76 cities in 3-day sweep (Video)

In a three-day sweep of 76 cities, the FBI rescued 105 children ages 13 to 17 from prostitution and sexual exploitation. A total of 150 pimps were arrested. Many of the sexually exploited teenagers were being recruited right out of the foster-care system according to John Ryan who is the chief executive of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The nonprofit organization assisted the FBI with the weekend sting.

According to a Los Angeles Times report on July 29, 2013, John Ryan said that “we are finding a very disturbing trend. They leave foster care and they literally fall off the radar. That’s something that needs to be addressed.”

During the FBI raid, Federal agents went undercover out onto streets and into hotels and casinos in 76 cities nationwide and used social media platforms as part of their investigating method in "Operation Cross Country VII, a three-day enforcement action to address commercial child sex trafficking throughout the United States."

In San Diego, the FBI raid resulted in the rescue of five teens and the arrest of six pimps. In San Francisco, the FBI raid resulted in the rescue of 12 teens and the arrest of 17 pimps.

Since 2003, FBI’s Innocence Lost initiative has identified and rescued more than 2,700 sexually exploited children.

Kate Middleton post-baby body: Why did Kate still look pregnant? (Video)

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, appeared less than 27 hours after giving birth in front of the media, cameras, reporters, and the whole world.

Still visibly tired and exhausted, Kate Middleton and her husband Prince William looked as happy and proud as any new parents when they stood outside of St. Mary’s Hospital at 7:14 p.m. on July 23, 2013.

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s son George Alexander Louis was born at 4:24 p.m. on July 22, 2013, weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces.

He's "got way more hair than me, thank God," said Prince William proudly about his new son. "He's got a good pair of lungs on him that's for sure. He's a good boy, he's quite heavy."

As for the little heir's fashionably late arrival, Prince William told reporters that "I'll remind him of his tardiness when he's a bit older. I know how long you've all been standing here, so hopefully the hospital and you guys can all go back to normal now and we can go and look after him."

For Kate Middleton, her eyes, her smile, her hands, and her body posture said more than any words could have expressed – she was proud to be a mother.

Stomach bug 2013 Cyclospora spreads to 15 states: Causes, diagnosis, symptoms, treatment (Video)

The stomach bug of 2013 called Cyclospora (Cyclo - spora) is becoming an outbreak of tropical illness in the United States and continues to spread to more states on a daily basis.  Cyclospora cayetanensis is a parasite composed of one cell which is too small to be seen without a microscope. This parasite causes an intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis.

As of July 26, 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is following the outbreak on a map. Click here for the CDC link.

Parasitic meningitis: Swimming illness confirmed in 12-year-old girl, symptoms, causes, treatment (Video)

Parasitic meningitis, a usually fatal brain infection that can occur after swimming or irrigating, flushing, or rinsing one's sinuses, has been detected in a 12-year-old girl from Arkansas.

The brain infection formally known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) can occur when people dive in warm freshwater places such as lakes and rivers. The Naegleria fowleri ameba is a single-celled living organism and a parasite that travels up the nose to the brain where it destroys the brain tissue.

Mayor Bob Filner has been served with subpoena in sexual harassment case

On Friday morning, Mayor Bob Filner was served with a subpoena in the sexual harassment case and he is “to appear at a deposition on August 9,” reported 10News just a few minutes after reporting about Bob Filner’s press conference.
“The deposition will take place at the San Diego city attorney’s office and will include city attorneys and private attorney Gloria Allred, who represents former Filner communications director, Irene McCormack Jackson.”
Mayor Bob Filner said in his press conference that he would enter “intensive therapy” for two weeks beginning on August 5. City Attorney Jan Goldsmith said if Mayor Bob Filner is not deposed before August 9, he could be held in contempt of court and put in jail.

While Bob Filner does not appear to understand that the lawsuit's claims are valid and has vowed to "vigorously" defend himself against the charges, his former colleagues in Washington are speaking out.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the behavior of San Diego's Mayor Bob Filner and New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, an ex-congressman embroiled in a sexting scandal, is "reprehensible."

On Friday, Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Florida congresswoman, called on Filner to resign "for the good of the city."

San Diego’s Mayor Bob Filner refuses to resign: ‘On August 5, I will be entering a counseling clinic to undergo two weeks of intensive therapy’ (Video)

Mayor Bob Filner said in a news conference in San Diego on Friday, July 26, 2013, that he will take two weeks off for therapy. "On August 5, I will be entering a counseling clinic to undergo two weeks of intensive therapy.”

Here are some excerpts from his speech and insights provided by San Diego’s 10News:
As soon as he [Bob Filner] made that remark, a sound system failure occurred and the mayor was unable to continue. He stood at the podium for a couple of minutes waiting to see if the problem could be resolved.
It could not, and he left. He returned a few minutes later, and started over.
“I must take responsibility,” the mayor said, calling his behavior inexcusable. “I apologize to the people of San Diego.”
The mayor said it was “not acceptable for me to explain my conduct as standards for a different generation.”
He said he will be at the clinic full-time, and will be briefed every morning and evening on city business.
Filner said this was "just the first step to ongoing counseling. ... I must become a better person,” he said, and added he hopes he will be forgiven one day.
He will return on August 19, and his focus will be on being “the best mayor I can be, and the best person I must be.”

Clearly a sign – Mayor Bob Filner has no intent to resign.

Bob Filner: What exactly did San Diego's Mayor Bob Filner do that is called sexual harassment by 7 women?

Even though San Diego’s Mayor Bob Filner initially apologized for his inappropriate behavior towards women, he does not appear to really understand the sexual harassment allegations against him. Born on Sept. 4, 1942, the now 70-year-old mayor might have trouble understanding why his (from his point of view) “manly” behavior is causing uproar.

The first woman who came publicly forward with sexual harassment allegations against Mayor Bob Filner is 57-year-old Irene McCormack Jackson who is a longtime San Diego Union-Tribune reporter and who left to work for the Port of San Diego before accepting a job with Filner's office in January of 2013. She filed a lawsuit in San Diego Superior Court against San Diego’s Mayor Bob Filner and the city and is being represented by no other than Jackson's high-profile Los Angeles-based attorney, Gloria Allred.

During her press conference on July 22, 2013, Gloria Allred gave the following description of Mayor Bob Filner’s behavior – she should work without her panties on, that he wanted to see her naked, that he could not wait to consummate their relationship (which there was none other than professional), and that he couldn’t wait to marry her.  He had the right to demand kisses, to drag her around in a headlock while whispering sexual comments in her ear. “He apparently thought that he had the right to tell her that he wanted to see her naked,” said Gloria Allred.

Irene McCormack Jackson also described Mayor Bob Filner’s behavior during the July 22, 2013 press conference.

Besides phone records by the NSA, who else is collecting private information such as medical records, financial records, credit card purchases? (Video)

The video shows how the votes are proceeding across party lines.

On Wednesday, Jul 24, 2013, the House voted against an amendment that would have limited the National Security Agency (NSA) to collect U.S. phone call records. So as the NSA is allowed to continue to collect phone call records from every person, four major insights became evident from the House discussion about the amendment.

  • It is more important to hear what is NOT being said than what is being said: "During the debate, few lawmakers stood to defend NSA's surveillance programs." Only a few speakers rose to speak against the NSA surveillance program and for the amendment, reported the Los Angeles Times on July 24, 2013. Evidently, defenders of the NSA surveillance program did not feel any need to defend it, already knowing that NSA would not be stopped. Politics is determined behind the scenes, not in front of the scenes.
  • The NSA activity goes beyond party lines: “But the breadth of support in both parties for the amendment, which lost 217 to 205, underscored the extent of the disquiet in Congress with the notion that the NSA is collecting information on nearly every call made by nearly every American. … The strongest backers of the measure were an oil-and-water mix of deeply conservative tea party Republicans and some of the chamber's most liberal Democrats. A majority of Democrats bucked President Obama and voted for the amendment.”
  • Privacy rights do not exist, even if stated in contracts: “Currently, the government obtains orders from a secret federal intelligence court requiring telecommunications providers to give the NSA calling records on nearly every American. Officials say they need all the records to be able to identify U.S. residents unknown to the intelligence community who may be working with foreign terrorists.”
  • Phone records are not the only kind of information collected: “In a speech before the liberal Center for American Progress on Tuesday, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) hinted that there were other large-scale surveillance programs yet to be revealed. A member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Wyden has warned for years that surveillance laws were being interpreted in an expansive way that would surprise most Americans. … There is nothing in the Patriot Act that limits this sweeping bulk collection to phone records. … The government can use the Patriot Act's business records authority to collect, collate and retain all sorts of sensitive information, including medical records, financial records or credit card purchases."

When asked in a Senate hearing in June whether other private records of Americans are being collected, Gen. Keith Alexander, who heads the NSA, did not deny it. But he replied, "That would be outside of NSA."

So the question is, besides the NSA, who else is collecting private information?

Would Edward Snowden know? He is said to have information even more devastating to the U.S. Government than the information he has already leaked. As of July 24, 2013, however, the U.S. Government is putting pressure on Russia not to grant Edward Snowden temporary asylum in Russia but to extradite him leaving Edward Snowden still stranded – after one month—at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport.

Thousands of small, civilian drones are coming into use in the United States: Can someone just shoot them down?

Congress gave the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a United States government agency, until 2015 to safely integrate drones, or also called unmanned aircrafts, into the skies over the United States.
“FAA officials have estimated that once regulations are in place, thousands of drones will be in use across the country for a wide variety of purposes, from helping farmers figure out which crops need watering to tracking sea lions in remote rocky outcroppings to aiding search and rescue missions.”
The July 19, 2013, Associated Press report has some people who are concerned about their privacy asking whether those drones can just be shot down.

One small town in Colorado, Deer Trail (with about 600 residents), is working on a proposed ordinance when it comes to drones. A drone hunting permit would cost $25 and the town would give a reward of $100 for anyone who “presents a valid hunting license and identifiable pieces of a drone that has been shot down.”

"I don't want to live in a surveillance society. I don't feel like being in a virtual prison," says 48-year-old Phillip Steel who is the author of the drone-hunting proposal. "This is a pre-emptive strike."

As a pre-emptive counterstrike to anyone thinking about shooting down a drone, the FAA reminds people that while the land in the United States might be owned by people, the sky is owned by the United States government and that the FAA regulates the nation's airspace, including the airspace over cities and towns.

“People who fire guns at drones are endangering the public and property and could be prosecuted or fined, the Federal Aviation Administration warned Friday [July 19, 2013].”

Edward Snowden timeline and July 16 update: Snowden applies for temporary asylum in Russia

Tuesday, July 16, 2013: Edward Snowden -- who has been at Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport for the past three weeks -- applies for temporary asylum in Russia since the US has revoked his passport and he cannot go anywhere.

Monday, July 15, 2013: Snowden's lawyer Anatoly Kucherena, who is Kremlin-friendly, met with Snowden for four hours and helped him complete his temporary asylum paperwork.  If Russia’s federal migration service (FMS) approves Snowden’s temporary asylum request, Snowden could leave the airport and live in Russia; possibly also travel to other countries.

Sunday, June 23, 2013: Snowden traveled to Moscow on the commercial Aeroflot flight SU213 from Hong Kong accompanied by Sarah Harrison of WikiLeaks after Hong Kong considered extraditing Snowden to the United States. Snowden had hoped to continue his travel to South America but was not able to do so without a passport.

June 14, 2013: U.S. federal prosecutors charged Snowden with espionage and theft of government property.

Post June 6, 2013: Edward Snowden becomes known as the ex-CIA and ex-NSA-contracted systems analyst who leaked secret NSA details.

June 6, 2013: Journalist Glenn Greenwald, documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras, and Washington Post reporter Barton Gellman met with Snowden in Hong Kong and began publishing information provided by Edward Snowden without initially revealing his identity.

May 20, 2013: Snowden, who was a computer technician for U.S. defense contractor Booz Allen Hamilton, leaves his residence and his job at the United States National Security Agency (NSA) in Hawaii and flies to Hong Kong.

So what are those revelations that got Snowden stranded in Russia?
  • The NSA operates a complex web of spying programs which allow it to intercept internet and telephone conversations from over a billion users from dozens of countries around the world.
  • Specific revelations have been made about China, the European Union, Latin America, Iran and Pakistan, and Australia and New Zealand.
  • Many of the spying programs overlap and interrelate among one another and are often done with the assistance of US entities such as the DOJ and the FBI and are sanctioned by US laws such as the FISA Amendments Act.
  • Many of NSA's programs are directly aided by national and foreign intelligence services, Britain's GCHQ and Australia's DSD, as well as by large private telecommunications and internet corporations, such as Verizon, Telstra, Google and Facebook. Microsoft and Silicon Valley are also participants.

Some of these programs are:

PRISM – Cooperation between the NSA and internet companies, whereby the latter allow the former access (whether direct or indirect is disputed) to their servers.

Boundless Informant – the computer program that physically performs the data collection.

X-Keyscore – a program run out of Australia and New Zealand, which specifically targets foreign-language emails.

Dropmire – a program that specifically targets foreign embassies and diplomats

Fairview – a programme that targets mobile phone usage (particularly text messages) in foreign countries.

Upstream and Tempora – collecting data from fiber-optic cables and internet backbones.

MAINWAY (call records), Main Core (financial records) – storing the collected data

Stellar Wind – mining the collected data

ECHELON – intercepts commercial satellite trunk communications by all of the Five Eyes signatories

Turbulence – includes cyber-warfare capabilities, such as targeting enemies with malware

Insider Threat Program – policy requiring federal employees to report "high-risk persons or behaviors" from among co-workers, as well as to punish those who fail to report such colleagues.

As Edward Snowden is spending his days at Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport, he has the support of WikiLeaks and human rights activists. Edward Snowden allegedly has further and more devastating information than the ones already leaked. Much of that information has been put into the hands of people who, should something happen to Edward Snowden, might find its way into the press.

Historically, Edward Snowden’s saga is really no surprise. Following World War II, paranoia and fear have ruled many countries and spying by any means necessary deems to be fit for any country that wants to compete. Remembering that the internet originally was a military venture makes it no surprise that it has become a major means for governments to collect information. There is nothing private about the internet.

While historically there is nothing surprising about the Edward Snowden saga, Edward Snowden himself is a puzzle.

Edward Snowden, who was born on June 21, 1983, hasn’t completed anything (high school, college, a Special Forces recruit in the United States Army) and yet he is an ex-CIA and ex-NSA-contracted systems analyst with access to most sensitive information?

How effective can all of those secret international and national surveillance programs be if they cannot detect its own “traitor” or people that are capable of planning the Boston Marathon bombings?

Something does not add up.

Why Trayvon Martin protests should worry the nation: Is Trayvon Martin being used?

Seeing some of the pictures of Trayvon Martin displayed during the Trayvon Martin protests happening across the nation are extremely worrisome. Trayvon Martin shown draped in the American flag, his hands being black and white, and the face of innocence appears to be an idolized picture of a troubled 17-year-old that has very little to do with reality.

Apparently, protesters who have never personally met Trayvon Martin can use the death of the 17-year-old for whatever means necessary.

There are, however, people who have met Trayvon Martin. Based on the fact that they were not presented in court as character witnesses for Trayvon Martin and against George Zimmerman shows that Trayvon Martin was not the “idolized” young man that is being displayed during protests today.

While everyone has the right to protest, it might be helpful to take a closer look at what one is protesting for. Is the protest for Trayvon Martin, for civil rights, or for one’s own interest?

What kind of message are the children and young teens of the nation getting by these protests? Troubled kids end up as idols when they get killed?

An inside look at Trayvon Martin and beyond the George Zimmerman trial

Stefan Molyneux from Freedomain Radio has some interesting insights not only into Trayvon Martin but also some of the thought-provoking aspects of the George Zimmerman trial that go beyond the courtroom. Stefan’s analysis of raising children in the United States is interesting and worth listening to.

Stefan Molyneux’s second video is interesting to watch because he replies to some of the comments under the above video. His emphasis on evidence versus emotionally-charged comments in regard to the Trayvon Martin case reflects so much of what is happening during the violent and non-violent protests after the George Zimmerman “not guilty” verdict.

'Glee' star Cory Monteith found dead at age 31 in Vancouver hotel room only 3 months after rehab (Video)

On Friday night, 31-year-old “Glee” star Cory Monteith was with other people. Early Saturday morning, he returned alone to his hotel room on the 21st floor in Vancouver's Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel. By Saturday noon, Cory Monteith was found dead by hotel staff when the “Glee” actor hadn’t checked out of the hotel as scheduled.

According to police, by the time hotel staff found Cory Monteith, he had already been dead for several hours. Police do not suspect any foul play but Cory Monteith’s cause of death is still undetermined. So far police do not know whether Cory Monteith’s  longtime girlfriend and co-star Lea Michele or any other “Glee” actors were at the hotel or why Cory Monteith was there.

In March, Cory Monteith had checked himself voluntarily into rehab for one month for substance abuse. Lea Michele and other “Glee” actors were very supportive of Cory Monteith’s decision to deal with his substance abuse.

Cory Monteith’s untimely and tragic death is shocking the world.

KTVU and NTSB apologize for prank Asiana Airlines Flight 214 pilot names ’Sum Ting Wong’ and ‘Wi Tu Lo’ (Video)

On Friday, six days after the tragic Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash, KTVU, a Fox affiliate San Francisco Bay Area television station, broadcast the names of the four Asiana Airlines Flight 214 pilots as “"Capt. Sum Ting Wong," "Wi Tu Lo," “Ho Lee Fuk,” and “Bang Ding Ow” during its noon broadcast. Evidently, KTVU never said the names out loud before broadcasting them on television.

After the mishap went viral and sparked outrage, KTVU apologized by Friday night stating that KTVU had confirmed the names of the Asiana Airlines pilots with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
“We made several mistakes when we received this information. First, we never read the names out loud, phonetically sounding them out. Then, during our phone call to the NTSB where the person confirmed the spellings of the names, we never asked that person to give us their position with the agency. We heard this person verify the information without questioning who they were and then rushed the names on our noon newscast.”
By 6 p.m. on Friday night, the NTSB also apologized with an official press release.
“The National Transportation Safety Board apologizes for inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed as those of the pilots of Asiana flight 214, which crashed at San Francisco International Airport on July 6. Earlier today, in response to an inquiry from a media outlet, a summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft. The NTSB does not release or confirm the names of crewmembers or people involved in transportation accidents to the media. We work hard to ensure that only appropriate factual information regarding an investigation is released and deeply regret today's incident.”
What makes this incident even more puzzling is that the names of the pilot and co-pilot of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 were already released by Asiana Airlines spokeswoman Lee Hyomin according to a Fox News report on July 8, 2013.

Lee Gang-guk, the pilot who was making his first landing with a Boeing 777 at San Francisco International Airport “was trying to get used to the 777 during Saturday's crash landing. She says the pilot had nearly 10,000 hours flying other planes, including the Boeing 747, but had only 43 hours on the 777. … Co-pilot Lee Jeong-min has 3,220 hours of flying experience with the Boeing 777 and a total of 12,387 hours of flying experience, and was helping his colleague with the landing.”

Does KTVU or the NTSB watch or read the news?

Colorado secede update: The birth of 51st state ‘North Colorado’ continues

The Colorado secede idea might have sounded too unrealistic just a month ago but three more counties in northeastern Colorado and two in Kansas now want to join the Colorado secession movement to form the 51st state of "North Colorado."

County officials in 10 of Colorado's 64 counties are talking about founding “North Colorado” and are asking for formal recognition as a state. Besides feeling that they are not being heard in Washington, Republican conservative farmers and ranchers in the northeastern Colorado counties are fed up with providing Colorado’s urban liberal “city slickers” with money and not getting any valuable representation in return. An estimated 80 percent of the oil and gas revenue in Colorado comes from the group of counties that are pondering secession.

“Representatives from the 10 counties held a meeting on Monday in the town of Akron in Washington County to begin mapping the boundaries for the new state they say will represent the interests of rural Colorado,” reports CBS Denver this week.

In order to continue with the Colorado secession and to form the new 51st state “North Colorado,” approval is needed from not only voters but the Colorado General Assembly and U.S. Congress. Colorado secession organizers are hoping to put the idea to voters as early as November.

Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash claims third victim: 15-year-old Wipeng Liu dies of her injuries

Asiana Airlines Flight 214 has claimed its third victim. On Friday, 15-year-old Wipeng Liu died of her injuries at San Francisco General Hospital. The Chinese consulate has confirmed that Wipeng Liu was a Chinese national. Wipeng Liu had been in critical condition since the Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash. Her family is asking that no further details are released about Wipeng Liu’s injuries and detailed circumstances of her death as the family needs time to grieve.

San Francisco General Hospital had received 67 patients from the Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash. As of Friday, five adults and one child still remain at the hospital. Two of the adults remain in critical condition with spinal cord, abdominal trauma, road rash, and bone fractures. The other four Asiana Airlines Flight 214 victims are in serious to fair to good condition reported NBC Bay Area on Friday, July 12, 2013.

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner in the hot seat: Should he resign?

San Diego’s Mayor Bob Filner is in the hot seat for alleged sexual harassment and mingling with real estate as San Diego’s 10News three video reports below show. Should Mayor Bob Filner resign or is his apology “I must and will change my behavior” enough?

A private investigator told San Diego’s Team 10 how Republicans have watched Bob Filner for years and how undercover pictures and videos show Bob Filner with women.

And as San Diego's Team 10 reports, Mayor Bob Filner isn't only "messing" with women but also with real estate as a couple from La Jolla had to find out.

"I have no idea, other than he is abusing his power in some way or he owed someone a favor," Jack Visin said. "I think he has a lot better things to do than messing around with an old 600-square-foot cottage."

Should Mayor Bob Filner save taxpayers money and resign?

Dead man becomes new mayor of San Agustín Amatengo: Lenin Carballido

Lenin Carballido died of a diabetic coma in 2010. Despite having been dead for three years, however, Lenin Carballido got elected on Sunday as new mayor of San Agustín Amatengoa, a small village in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico.

A dead man cannot be the newly elected mayor of San Agustín Amatengo, argue Oaxaca state prosecutors.

Sure enough, an investigation by state prosecutors revealed that relatives of Lenin Carballido had their hands in Lenin Carballido's official death.

At the time of his death, Lenin Carballido, whose full name is Leninguer Raymundo Carballido Morales, was wanted for having allegedly participated in a 2004 gang rape.

After Lenin Carballido’s relatives presented his death certificate to prosecutors, he was off the hook.

That is until he won the election as mayor on Sunday.

"When he registered as a candidate, he presented all his paperwork, his birth certificate, a letter stating he had no criminal record," said Rey Morales, the state leader of the PRD. "He fooled the prosecutors' office, he fooled the office of records, he fooled electoral officials."

While Oaxaca prosecutors are conducting a thorough investigation into the dead man’s case, the about 1,500 residents of San Agustín Amatengo are taking the matter more lightly – if they can’t use a dead man as a mayor, they will simply use Lenin Carballido’s representative.

Politicians – a species of its own.

Organ donor declared dead but wakes up just as doctors want to harvest her organs

Are some doctors too quick to declare someone dead so they can harvest the person’s organs? Colleen Burns had been declared dead by her doctors but just when they were about to harvest her organs, she woke up.
“Colleen Burns eerily opened her eyes and looked at the operating lights above her, shocking doctors who believed she was dead and were about to remove her organs and donate them to patients on the transplant waiting list.”
An ABC’s news report on July 9, 2013, and a Syracuse Post-Standard news report on July 7, 2013, describe in detail the series of events and mistakes that were made by doctors at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, N.Y., in 2009.

The Syracuse Post-Standard just recently broke the story after it uncovered the detailed report about the near-organ removal on a living patient from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it was exactly midnight when Colleen Burns opened her eyes and doctors stopped getting ready to harvest her organs before it was too late.
“On 10/18 and 10/19/09, as a result of the incomplete neurological evaluation of the patient and inaccurate diagnosis of anoxic (irreversible) brain damage, physical documentation in the MR reveals Patient A [Colleen Burns] was evaluated for brain death. When she did not meet the apnea criterion in the brain death determination process, on 10/19/09, with the family requesting organ donation, plans were made to pursue DCD. (Again, this was the direct result of the inaccurate diagnosis of anoxic/irreversible brain damage.) … At 12:00 a.m. on 10/20/10, Patient A was moved to the OR suite for pursuit of DCD. However, in the OR suite Patient A opened her eyes and looked at the lights; pursuit of DCD was subsequently halted.”

Did uninjured Asiana Airlines Flight 214 survivors have to stay in dirty area, wait for hours, and get crackers and fruit after crash?

It is hard to believe that the uninjured survivors of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 had to go on a cargo elevator, go to a dirty and smelly place, and then wait for hours without being adequately attended to. But one man who was interviewed by ABC after he had survived the Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash, spoke about his experience.
"They put us on some sort of cargo elevator and we are somewhere at a dirty smelly place. I had to wait five hours with no diapers and no food. After complaining hard, the authorities finally just brought me diapers."
“Later, they were moved to a more pleasant lounge and given crackers and fruit. But they were told that everyone on the plane had to be interviewed by the FBI before they could be allowed to leave.”
It would be interesting to know who, besides the FBI, was responsible for the well-being of the uninjured survivors.

How much are airports and airlines prepared in taking care of uninjured airplane survivors?

In his interview with ABC, Asiana Airlines Flight 214 survivor Lee Jang Hyung said that the injured passengers of Flight 214 were taken to hospitals but that the uninjured passengers were “all waiting for directions.”

Lee Jang Hyung was sitting with his 33-year-old wife Lee Jee Young and his 15-month old toddler son in the front row in the economy class section of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 when it crashed in San Francisco on Saturday.

Like many other passengers and witnesses, Lee Jan Hyung noticed that something wasn’t right when the Boeing 777 was just still above the water and about to land.
"Just minutes before landing, I looked out the window and realized the plane's angle was strangely tilted. The seawater level did not look right. Suddenly, the plane's tail part hit the ground and the aircraft bounced upwards and then bam, it hit the ground again. This time it felt like the entire plane hit parallel, but tilted to the left. That pressure was huge. Very strong. I saw luggages fall from the top. And the plane gradually stopped. Until then, there was no warning. The drop happened without a warning.”
According to ABC’s  report, after Asiana Airlines Flight 214 had stopped its violent crash landing, the passengers “ heard an announcement saying the plane has safely landed and everyone should stay put.”

Lee Jan Hyung told ABC that he put the oxygen mask that had dropped down on himself and his 15-month-old son and that he ran to the door.

Free Microsoft update 8.1 for Windows 8 is here: Video link, free download, new features

Windows 8 has been a headache for many; especially because of the missing Start button. The free update Windows 8.1 -- codenamed Windows Blue – is now available as a beta version download until the final release of Windows 8.1 comes out later this year. Microsoft has a video about Windows 8.1 update available at the MEET WINDOWS 8.1 PREVIEW Video website: windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/preview

The video shows what improved features Windows 8.1 offers. From the video website, Microsoft has a link to a FAQ web page and a link to download the Windows 8.1 update.

In case you don’t like to read the FAQs, Microsoft warns that downloading the beta version of the Windows 8.1 free update to Windows 8 is more for experienced users.

Watching the Windows 8.1 preview is worth the time though to see that Microsoft listened to the many complaints about Windows 8.

Windows 8.1 has a few more improved features:

Personalization: Windows 8.1 allows users to personalize the Start screen more with new colors, backgrounds, photos, and layout.

Start button: In Windows 8.1, Microsoft brought back the Start button on the left side of the screen to go to Control Panel settings, open the Task Manager, perform a search, and other useful system tools like it used to be in Windows 7.

Yoga classes in school: Parents fight against Yoga class but a Blacksmith knows better

Yoga classes in school has been the topic by several news outlets in Southern California this week.

“Parents of two children in the Encinitas Union School district in San Diego County sued the district because they claim the Ashtanga yoga classes being offered in place of more traditional physical education instruction indoctrinate the children. But on Monday afternoon, Judge John S. Meyer ruled in favor of the school district,” reported San Diego’s NBC News on July 2, 2013.

Despite the judge’s ruling, one can expect that the parents’ lawyer will continue to fight even though the Yoga classes and the whole program is being funded completely by a $500,000 grant from the K.P. Jois Foundation. The yoga program is not taking away money from other school funds.

But more than that, the parents are missing a point.

As a writer, I prefer not to write news in the first person but since this is a personal experience, it is necessary.

After I adopted a rescue horse, I found a Farrier who could finally take care of my horse’s feet since they had been neglected for a long time. For non-horse people, a Farrier is a Blacksmith who takes care of a horse’s feet and who makes a horse’s shoes.

My Farrier Jason looked like a Blacksmith from the Old West, strong, heavily build, rugged, and a no-nonsense guy. He could make my horse do anything whether she wanted to or not. And she is a stubborn Arab girl.

Jason was, like many rough guys, not much of a talker. However, after taking care of my horse’s feet, he told me one time that being close to 60 years old, he is glad he didn’t have to deal with his back pain anymore.

To make a long story short, being a Farrier takes a lot out of one’s back because lifting horses’ feet all day takes a lot of strength and a lot of bending over.

Having been a Farrier for most of his life, Jason dealt with a lot of back pain and no medication and no doctor could help him. Until one doctor recommended taking a yoga class.

Jason attended a yoga class for weeks and it took care of his back pain completely. Unfortunately, when his wife discovered that he was the only guy in a yoga class that consisted of some skinny girls in tights, she made him stop.

Jason’s experience with yoga, however, made all the difference in dealing with his back pain and his overall well-being that he continued to do yoga at home with “my little yoga mat,” as he called it.

I wonder if the parents who are fighting against the yoga classes in school would hear what an almost 60-year-old tough guy has to say about yoga, if it would make a difference to them.

Self-checkout machines at grocery stores: Don't pay for someone else's groceries

Self-checkout machines at grocery stores have become a favorite among shoppers that hate having to wait in long lines.

However, don't forget to to push the FINISH button when you are done using the self-checkout machine.

If you do not push the FINISH button, the machine will continue to ring up the groceries and you are paying for them until someone else pushes "Finish."

Once you swipe your credit card at the self-checkout machine in order to pay for your groceries your credit card number will be valid to use until you do click the FINISH button. If you do not click it, the machine assumes you are continuing shopping and will continue to add up the cost of the groceries of the next person.

The importance of clicking the Finish button was part of an investigation by San Diego's 10News team which  was alerted by a customer who got his groceries free because it went on someone else's credit card. To read more about their report go to the July 2, 2013, 10News article and video.
